Likud, confident it can make a strong showing in next fall’s Histadrut elections, nominated Yaacov Shamai on Sunday night to be its candidate for secretary general of Israel’s trade union federation, which has been dominated by Labor since its inception nearly 70 years ago.

Foreign Minister Moshe Arens, chairman of the Likud Secretariat, claimed the public understands that the Labor Party “has strangled the economy” with its policies. He said he was sure Likud can win.

Labor may also be challenged for the first time by an ultra-Orthodox party. The Shas leadership voted unanimously last week to ask its governing Council of Torah Sages for permission to participate in the Histadrut elections.
