Mayor John V. Lindsay said today in a Passover message that the story of Passover “has relevance to our own day” and that “the elements out of which the holiday emerged are still with us.” He declared that “the struggle against oppression goes on in the Soviet Union and in Arab lands.” He added that Israel “remains a beacon of hope for Jews from different parts of the world, from lands where they are denied their full rights as citizens.”
The Mayor added that the meaning of Passover was “not alone for the Jewish people but for all people, for at the core of it is the desire of every human being to live a decent and meaningful life, to have a sense of identity as an individual and as a member of a group, to live in peace and without fear of the future.” In that “very deep sense,” Lindsay said, “Passover is a universal holiday.”
