Bishop Justinas Staugaitis of the Diocese of Telsiai today agreed to issue an appeal through the churches of his diocese in an effort to stem the anti-Jewish agitation which is assuming serious proportions.
The Bishop consented to take action when approached with this object by a delegation of leaders of the Telsiai Jewish Community. Telsiai recently was the scene of a violent outbreak of anti-Jewish rioting during which many Jewish homes were stoned. Following the riots in that city, tense anti-Semitic atmosphere developed in many of the surrounding towns.
As an aftermath of the riots a military court at Telsiai yesterday sentenced eighteen of the participants to various terms in prison.
