The call issued by the Kovno Rabbinate to the Jewish population of Lithuania’s capital to observe yesterday as a day of fast, prayer and protest against the Sunday Closing Bill met with a ready response on the part of the Jewish population of Kovno.
All Jewish stores were closed. Thousands gathered in the synagogues and offered fervent prayers for the prevention of the bill which threatens their economic existence. The Rabbis delivered sermons on the subject. Open meetings were held near the synagogues.
Special police despatches were assigned to keep order; several arrests were made. Similar protests were held in the provincial towns of Lithuania.
