The first rabbinical conference in the Republic of Lithuania, convoked by the “Jewish Religious Council” created at the initiative of the Lithuanian Ministry of the Interior, was opened here yesterday in the presence of 97 rabbis.
During the first session a clash occurred between the two groups at the conference, one belonging to the Agudath Israel and the other to the Zionist orthodox group, Mizrachi.
The Mizrachi delegates to the conference protested against the fact that several rabbis who are leaders in the Mizrachi movement were not invited to the conference and demanded that an invitation be extended to them by wire. The demand, which was put to vote, was defeated by a majority.
Ninety-seven delegates are participating in the conference. One hundred and forty-two invitations were sent out.
Messages of congratulations were received from the president of the Lithuanian Republic and the Prime Minister.
The agenda includes a discussion on the statute of the Jewish Religious Council, the needs of Jewish religious education, the maintenance of the Yeshivas and the supervision of the sale of Kosher meat.
