Little Jennie Goldstein, six-year-old pupil of the Bnei Levi Hebrew School, heard the rabbi of the congregation speaking about the persecutions of the Jews in Germany. The same afternoon she came to the rabbi with five pennies in her hand.
“Here is five cents for the Jews in Germany,” said the little girl.
“Who gave you the five cents?” asked the rabbi.
“A boy hit me, so I started to cry. Then a lady passed by. I think she is German, and gave me five cents to stop crying. So here it is for the German Jews.”
“Don’t you want to keep the money for yourself?”
“No, I want to give it to the German Jews.”
