Almost all of the two hundred and seventy-five refugees who arrived in Canada from Spain and Portugal last month have been satisfactorily settled and absorbed into the life of the country, Saul Hayes, national director of the United Jewish Refugee and War Relief Agencies, reported yesterday at a meeting of that body. The group consisted to a large extent of technicians trained in various production processes.
The meeting also heard reports of steps being taken by Allied governments and by intergovernmental agencies to relieve the pressing refugee problem, especially in Spain, Portugal and North Africa. The work of the Intergovernmental Commission on Refugees, which is headed by Sir Herbert Emerson, and of the American War Refugee Board was praised by the meeting, presided over by Samuel Bronfman, national chairman.
