The unusual cold and frost which prevailed in the region for many days brought much suffering to the impoverished classes of the Jewish population here. A general lack of coal and food placed many Jewish families in a precarious situation.
By concerted action of the Yiddish newspapers of Warsaw and Lodz, “Hajnt,” “Moment,” “Lodzer Tageblatt” and “Neues Volksblatt,” an emergency relief campaign was launched. The newspapers also urged the local kehillahs and relief committees to cope with the situation. Due to this effort coal was secured for free distribution among the poor, soup kitchens were opened and buildings at several points were thrown open where the victims of the cold could stay.
