Edwin A. Locke, Jr., who was named this week by President Truman as co-ordinator of American assistance to the Near East, was sworn in this afternoon at a State Department ceremony.
H. Freeman Matthews, U. S. Deputy Under-Secretary of State for Political Affairs, described Mr. Locke’s mission as “very important. ” Mr. Locke, who has been given the personal rank of Ambassador, will leave in two weeks for Beirut where his headquarters will be located.
