The London press, while prominently featuring reports of the disorders in Palestine today, refrains from any comments on its causes, except Lord Rothermere’s anti-Semitic London Daily Mail, which sides with the Arabs and declares that their grievances are real and substantial, and argues that as much as one may sympathize with Zionism, considerable Jewish immigration into Palestine is bound to cause the gravest complications.
The Daily Mail predicts that if the Arab grievances are not met quickly, the trouble will spread just as it did in 1921 and in 1929, creating a risk for Great Britain that the entire Moslem population, including that of India, will become anti-British.
This afternoon’s press reports unrest growing in the Transjordan and that the Arabs of Damascus, Syria, are planning demonstrations in sympathy with the Palestinian Arabs.
Some apprehension is also felt in connection with the official opening on Tuesday of the newly-completed Haifa harbor, when, it is feared, a repetition of yesterday’s disorders will occur. That the Arabs will boycott the ceremonies is regarded as certain.
