The annual rush to synagogues throughout Britain for the High Holy Days was repeated again this week. All synagogues were filled to capacity with many overflow services held in private buildings.
Despite the addition of several large synagogues during the past year, there were still not enough seats for all Jews who wanted to worship. The new synagogue at St. Johns was used for the first time on Sunday eve, having been completed just in time for services.
The new synagogue is the largest in the United Kingdom with seats for 1,500 people. It was erected at a cost of more than $600, 000. The building vacated by the Orthodox congregation of the new synagogue was acquired by the New London congregation, the group which seceded from the United Synagogue in its dispute over Rabbi Louis Jacobs, whom Chief Rabbi Brodie refused to endorse as a Minister in a doctrinal dispute.
