VARIED REACTIONS WERE EXPRESSED IN LONDON NEWSPAPERS TODAY OVER THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS AT GENEVA WITH RESPECT TO THE COUNCIL’S DELIBERATIONS ON THE PALESTINE PROBLEM.

THE TIMES POINTS OUT THAT THE NEW PALESTINE COMMISSION ASKED BY FOREIGN SECRETARY EDEN WILL HAVE A DIFFICULT TASK SINCE MOST OF THE ARABS AND A NUMBER OF JEWS ARE UNCONDITIONAL ALLY HOSTILE TO PARTITION. “BOTH JEWISH AND ARAB CRITICS, HOWEVER, DO NOT HAVE A GENUINE ALTERNATIVE TO OFFER,” THE TIMES AVERS, “AND THEIR NEGATIVE ATTITUDE CANNOT PREVENT THE GOVERNMENT FROM PRESSING PREPARATIONS.” THE EDITORIAL CALLS ON THE PALESTINE ADMINISTRATION TO INVOKE STRONG MEASURES IN THE EVENT OF FURTHER OUTBREAKS OF VIOLENCE.

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH IN AN EDITORIAL ASSERTS CAPT. EDEN’S REQUEST FOR A NEW COMMISSION HAS OPENED THE DOOR TO “FRESH EFFORTS FOR CONCILIATION AND APPEASEMENT,” EXPLAINING ITS APPOINTMENT EDEN’S SPEECH BEFORE THE COUNCIL UNDER THE HEADLINE, “EDEN BOWS HEAD, GOES SLOW ON PALESTINE.”
