The anti-Nazi book by Lord Russell of Liverpool, British Army’s top legal officer, who resigned rather than withdraw publication of the volume, was found objectionable by the Lord Chancellor “not because of the nature of the views” expressed in the book “but on the undesirability of a holder of judicial office expressing views which are intended to affect or may affect a matter of present public controversy. “
A statement to this effect was made by the Lord Chancellor here today, explaining the Chancellor’s view on the matter. Lord Russell’s book, “The Scourge of the Swastika,” scheduled for release August 19, exposes Nazi brutalities against the Jews, based in part on the author’s experiences as British representative on the Allied War Crimes tribunals.
