Lord Mancroft, a member of one of the oldest Jewish families in England, an authority on financial affairs who had held many important government posts, died last night at the age of 70, after a long illness.
Formerly Sir Arthur Michael Samuel, Lord Mancroft was in 1912 Lord Mayor of Norwich. He was Staff Assistant to the Ministry of Munitions in 1915-16. During the years 1918-37, he was Conservative member of the Parliament. In the period from 1942 to 1927, Lord Mancroft was successively Parliamentary Under-Secretary to the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade and Minister for the Department of Overseas Trade. He was Financial Secretary to His Majesty’s Treasury in 1924-29.
