Making it clear that if Transjordan is not opened for Jewish immigration the Jews will flock to Syria and will form a substantial force in the French politics in the Near East, Lord Melchett today recommended in the London Times that the British government agree to admit Jews into Transjordan.
Lord Melchett points out that the present congestion in Palestine is causing troubles and is threatening to defeat the Zionist aims. A Jewish immigration into Transjordan would relieve this congestion, he argues.
“The British government should be interested in making it possible for a large central Jewish population to unfold itself within the British Empire. Any delay in the opening of Transjordan for Jews will divide the Jewish population between Syria, which is under the French, and Palestine, which is under the British domination,” Lord Melchett states.
In many Jewish communities in Europe Hebrew was spoken up to the eleventh century.
