Louis Strauss, Belgian statesman and oldest representative in the Belgian parliament, died here at the age of 78.
M. Strauss held many high positions in the Belgian state. He was Belgian consul to the United States during the administration of President Lincoln. He was a member of the Municipal Council of Antwerp, was president of the Council of Industry and Commerce of Belgium and a member of the French Society of Political Economy.
M. Strauss visited the United States last year in the month of August.
Plans for the construction of a new Jewish center at a cost of $250,000 were presented the twenty-fifth annual banquet of the B’nai Israel congregation of Jacksonville, Fla., recently.
The building when completed will have a place of worship, a club house, a school and class rooms.
Allentown’s (Pa.) quota of $40,000 in the joint campaign for Palestine colonization and relief in Europe was oversubscribed.

A decision to launch a $300,000 campaign to raise funds for an Immigrant Sheltering Home in Haifa, Palestine, a Preparatory Farm School for the Immigrants in Galil and an Orphan Home and Public Kitchen at Safed. was taken at a general meeting of the United Gallil Aid Society of New York held last week, Rabbi Uri Felshin presided at the meeting.
The officers of this Building Fund Committee are: Congressman Sol. Bloom. Chairman; Joseph Barondess, Vice-Chairman: Max Rosenblatt, Vice-Chairman: Benjamin Winter, Treasurer: Jacob L. Markel. Associate Treasurer; and Jacob Maniloff, Executive Director.
Hundreds of students of religious schools throughout the country will include in their Chanukah celebrations the first week in December social events for the benefit of the Penny Luncheons Fund of Hadassah.
The fund is used for providing hot lunches to school children in Palestine and training in domestic science to older girls.
