“Loyal” refugees will be permitted to stay in Wilno, it was declared today by the Lithuanian Refugee Commissioner in connection with the recently ordered registration. Alarm over the objectives of the registration is unfounded, the Yiddish newspaper Vilner Tagblatt said.
The Tagblatt reports the arrest of Dr. Joshua Gottlieb, former Polish deputy and Warsaw Jewish leader, by the Soviet authorities in Pinsk, to which he had escaped after the fall of the Polish capital.
The Lithuanian Red Cross announced today that it has registered 21,306 refugees in the Wilno district, including 7,437 Jews.
The famous Jewish religious college, Yeshivat Hahmei Lublin, is now functioning in the township of Kaindanai, to which it has been transferred with the consent of the Lithuanian authorities. The college formerly was located in Lublin, Nazi Poland, from which about forty of the school’s students succeeded in escaping to Lithuania, the remaining 45 and members of the faculty being arrested.
