The Maccabean Winter Sports Festival opened at Zakopane at noon today in a festive atmosphere, with the first event in the three day series a skiing competition.
Polish and Jewish flags decorated the city and the non-Jews are displaying a friendly attitude toward the visitors, 10,000 of them having arrived for the events.
A reception was held last night, attended by representatives of the government. Lord Melchett, honorary president of the World Maccabee Union, sent a bas-relief, symbolizing the renascence of the Jewish athlete.
Alexander Rosenfeld, vice-president of the World Maccabee Union, thanked the government authorities for its favorable attitude toward the Maccabee Union.
Addresses were also delivered by foreign representatives.
