James G. MacDonald, former member of the Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry on Palestine, and American-born Lady Astor engaged in an unscheduled verbal duel on the Holy Land today while being interviewed aboard the Queen Elizabeth.
MacDonald, who was returning from Palestine where he participated in ground breaking ceremonies for the Hebrew University Medical School, criticized British policy and hailed Jewish developments there. Lady Astor interjected that MacDonald was anti-British, and asked why the U.S. will not admit Jews. She added that “Jewish gangsters” in Palestine were injuring the cause of Jews everywhere and also said that “the Jews ought to stay put in Germany.” They both agreed, however, that if partition was the only solution, they were for it.
