Malcolm MacDonald, Secretary of State for Colonies, visited Palestine over the week-end, it was announced here today, consulting with heads of the Palestine administration and issuing a statement which stressed Britain’s determination to restore peace in the holy land on the basis of justice to Jews and Arabs.
Arriving in Jerusalem yesterday, by plane, Mr. MacDonald conferred with High Commissioner Sir Harold Alfred MacMichael, Major-General Robert H. Haining, General Officer in Command of British forces in Palestine and Transjordan; Allan Saunders, Inspector-General of Police, and other senior British officials. Before leaving Palestine this afternoon, he issued this statement:
“The High Commissioner and I are in constant touch by telegraph and dispatches, but it has been invaluable for me to have this opportunity for a conference with him and General Haining for a complete exchange of information. We, in common with many others, are concerned to play our part in restoring peace to Palestine on the basis of justice to the two peoples whose home is there and that will be our constant endeavor during the times that lie ahead.”
