Rabbi Edgar F. Magnin, who although but forty years of age, is the dean of the Los Angeles Rabbinate, was honored here at a celebration marking his fifteenth year of service as spiritual leader of Temple B’nai Brith, the leading Jewish Congregation in Southern California.
Speakers representing all elements of the community extended greetings, among them Dr. E. C. Moore, director of the University of California at Los Angeles; Joseph Scott, one of the most prominent Catholic laymen; Dr. Carl Patton, pastor of the First Congregational Church; George Mosbacher, president of the Jewish Federation of Welfare Organizations and vice-president of the Temple; Rabbi Maxwell Dubin, director of religious education of the Temple; Rt. Rev. W. Bertrand Stevens, bishop of the Episcopal Church; Dr. E. P. Ryland, secretary of the Church Federation of Los Angeles; Dr. D. W. Edelman, president of the Temple, and son of one of the first Rabbis of that congregation; Mrs. Alfred G. Shauer, president of the Sisterhood and Hon. Harry A. Hollzer, Judge of the Superior Court, president or the Men’s Club.
Rabbi Magnin came to Temple B’nai Brith in 1915 as associate rabbi with the late Rabbi Sigmund Hecht. During his ministry in Los Angeles, Rabbi Magnin has participated in every important cultural, civic and philanthropic movement. He helped to found the Los Angeles Opera Company and has furthered the interests of the Hollywood Bowl. He is on the executive board of the Boy Scouts, the Red Cross and the Community Chest. He is vice-president of the Cedars of Lebanon Hospital, and is a member of the board of the Jewish Welfare Fund.
