Israel’s mail deliveries were paralyzed this weekend as a result of a strike called Thursday by the 120 mail porters employed at the Tel Aviv and Haifa main post offices. The workers claim that their demands were not met when the country’s postal workers received their recent wage increases. The strike is not being supported by the Histadrut, Israel’s Labor Federation, or by the Civil Servants Union.
In the meantime, a tremendous backlog of undelivered mail has been piling up at the main post offices, and Israel’s communications with abroad have been seriously affected. Persons wishing to send airmail letters to other countries are forced to go to Lydda airport. in order to have their mail picked up for overseas delivery. Domestically, no mail can be delivered because the mail bags cannot reach the sorting and distribution rooms at the Haifa and Tel Aviv post offices.
