The Manchester Guardian asserted today that “the Palestine administration is about to stamp the Jewish population, which is entitled to complete equality, with the status of a permanent minority,” in commenting on yesterday’s debate in the House of Lords on the proposed Palestine representative legislative council.
Citing the reply of Lord Plymouth for the Government to criticism of the project in which he stated that the council could not be delayed, the Guardian declared that despite warnings on all sides, the Government is bent on proceeding with formation of the council.
“It is disposed to ignore Jewish opinion, which is entitled both in the name of justice and under the Mandate to be consulted,” the editorial said. Jewish organizations have declared their opposition to the council.
The Guardian warned that the Arabs would use their new position “to frustrate the development of a Jewish national home, doing this when, more than ever, the Mandatory Power should practice the utmost generosity and consideration to the Jews, who, as never before are the victims of persecution and so much need refuge.”
