The Manchester Guardian, in an editorial today, charged the Palestine Government with “internal weakness” and assailed it for failing to end eighteen-week old disorders.
The editorial said:
“The administration cannot restore order and it does not have confidence in its own power. It does not declare martial law or deport Arab leaders. But whatever may be said of this conciliatory policy, it bears most harshly on the Jews.
“They are not defended by the administration. They may not defend themselves. They have arms and could use them, but were they to do so we should witness the finally irony of British imperial power–the British administration presiding over a civil war.”
Denouncing the Government for failing to protect the Jews, the editorial declared that the administration did not fulfill the function of government.
“The administration in Palestine suffers from internal weakness,” it said.
The editorial criticized intervention by foreign Arab rulers in Palestine, assailed the talk of stoppage of Jewish immigration and warned against yielding to Arab violence.
