MEMBERS OF THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS MANDATES COMMISSION WERE UNDERSTOOD TODAY TO HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED IN THE VIEW THAT THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT HAS MADE MANY MISTAKES IN ADMINISTRATION OF PALESTINE, AS A RESULT OF ITS STUDY OF THE PALESTINE GOVERNMENT REPORTS FOR 1935 AND 1936, COVERING PERIODS LEADING UP TO AND INCLUDING THE ARAB REBELLION.
DESPITE A DESIRE TO UNDERSTAND THE ARAB VIEWPOINT, COMMISSION MEMBERS WERE ALSO REPORTED TO BLAME PALESTINE’S TROUBLES LARGELY ON THE ARAB ATTITUDE.
THE COMMISSION, HAVING COMPLETED ITS EXAMINATION OF THE PALESTINE GOVERNMENT REPORTS, TODAY STUDIED SEVERAL PETITIONS SUBMITTED TO IT. TOMORROW IT WILL DISCUSS VARIOUS POSSIBLE PLANS FOR THE FUTURE OF THE HOLY LAND, INCLUDING THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT’S PROPOSAL FOR PARTITIONING THE COUNTRY INTO JEWISH AND ARAB STATES AND A MANDATED CORRIDOR. ONE OF THE MEMBERS HAS DRAWN UP A LIST OF THE POSSIBILITIES AS A BASIS FOR THIS DISCUSSION.
THE POSSIBILITY THAT IRAQ WOULD BRING OBJECTIONS TO THE BRITISH PLAN TO PARTITION PALESTINE BEFORE THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS ASSEMBLY WAS FREELY DISCUSSED HERE TODAY. IN SUCH EVENT, IRAQ WOULD PROBABLY BE SUPPORTED BY TURKEY AND OTHER MOSLEM COUNTRIES.
