Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield’s call for a Senate investigation into claims by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat that he has “secret agreements” with the U.S. regarding Israel is in “cold storage” in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency was informed today.
Sadat claimed in a Kuwait news conference Feb. 29,.that the discussion on the Sinai agreement included promises from the U.S. that Israel would not attack Syria and the Palestinians would participate in a Middle East settlement. Mansfield. Democrat of Montane, noted.”We were told there were no secret agreements,” when Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger appeared before the committee of which Mansfield is a member.
Following Mansfield’s call, Kissinger said all agreements “relevant” to the Sinai accord were disclosed to Congress. Committee staff personnel indicated they received substantially the same information in inquiries at the State Department. “As of now. nothing further will be done” a Capitol source told JTA. “But the door is left open for possible investigation in the future.”
