Scores of Jewish students were beaten and manhandled today on the grounds of the University of Berlin in a renewal of yesterday’s student riots. While the National Socialists formed a corps and shouted, “Out with the Jews,” the Socialist students formed a similar group and shouted, ‘Out with the Nazis.” The uproar was so great that the day’s classes were suspended and the police were called in to disperse the rioters.
The intervention of the police established that many of the National Socialists were not students but merely hooligans seeking a fight. When they were expelled from the University buildings they formed a street demonstration which was quickly broken up by the police who swung their rubber clubs vigorously.
In connection with yesterday’s attacks in which two Jewish students, one a girl, were badly injured, a number of letters are published in today’s press protesting against the brutal beating of harmless girls. One student protested against the “barbarism and repulsive behavior” of the Nazi students.
Dean Deismann today issued a statement warning the students against maltreating minority students and offering to establish a neutral public forum where the students could air their differences peaceably.
