Map Company Will Revise East Side Guide

The Rand-McNally Company, publishers of maps and guide books has promised the American Jewish Congress to revise its “Guide to Places of Interest in the City and Environs” in order to eliminate opprobrious references to the Jews, it was announced by the AJC yesterday.

The action of the company is in response to a request submitted March 22 by Dr. Stephen S. Wise, president, in behalf of the American Jewish Congress, calling attention to offensive references to the Jews in descriptions of points of interest on New York’s East Side.

Steps for the creation of organized responsibility in Jewish life in the United States, and preparations for the nation-wide direct elections scheduled to be held in 1937 were taken by the American Jewish Congress, following the first meeting of the new administrative committee on Tuesday.

In accordance with the decisions of the extraordinary session which called for the organization of local Congress branches throughout the country, preliminary to the holding of direct elections, instructions were issued by the American Jewish Congress for the establishment of such local branches.

In a communication sent to the 682 elected delegates to the extraordinary session of the American Jewish Congress held in Philadelphia, Dr. Stephen S. Wise, president, outlines the immediate program to be followed by the national organization and calls upon the delegates to initiate organizational work in their local communities. The functions of the organization in the United States and in relation to Jews abroad are clearly defined.
