The left-wing Socialist Mapam Party today issued an appeal to the Mapai urging a united front in all municipalities and local councils where the combined labor parties gained a majority of the votes in last week’s munidipal elections. The proclamation calls on the Labor Party to join forces for a “systematic struggle against reaction.”
The Mapam statement bases its appeal on the following six-point analysis of the results of the elections: 1. The increase of the “reactionary, bourgeois power which is hidden behind the General Zionist facade”; 2. The decrease in the influence of the Mapai “despite its expolitation of the name, organization and funds belonging to the Histadrut as a whole;”
3. The Mapam is the only portion of the labor movement which retained and even consolidated its strength in the towns and villages and among the immigrants; 4. The Herut’s “fascist power has been hit but not yet defeated; 5. The losses suffered by all parties in the government coalition shows that “public confidence in the coalition is shaken;” 6. The increased influence of the Mapam in a larger number of municipalities where labor control is possible.
