The Mayor of Mattersdorf and Nazi party officials today attended ceremonies during which a white flag was raised over the synagogue to indicate that the last Jew had left the city. The white banner bore the inscription “We are without Jews,” signifying that the last of the 530 Jews who resided here at the time of Anschluss had moved to other localities or left the country. Authorities said the synagogue would be razed and replaced by new buildings.
