The committee for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Forest in Israel today announced that its fund for a forest of 10,000 trees to be planted in his memory is more than half subscribed. The committee, led by Max M. Kampelman and consisting of representatives of Jewish organizations in the Washington area, was established in honor of Dr. King’s leadership for civil rights and his “dream of justice, dignity and peace for all mankind,” the committee said on the occasion of Dr. King’s birthday.
Every Black and Jewish member of the U.S. Congress is an honorary sponsor of the forest. Rep. Charles B. Rangel (D-L-R.NY), chairman of the Black Congressional caucus, and Rep. Sidney R. Yates (D.I11.), dean of the Jewish Congressmen, are co-chairmen of the honorary sponsors. A friend of Israel, Dr. King once stated, “Israel is one of the greatest outposts of democracy in the world, and a marvelous example of what can be done, how desert land can be transformed into an oasis of brotherhood and democracy.”
