Mass deportations of Jews from France, suspended last fall because of domestic and foreign public pressure, have begun again, the Joint Distribution Committee disclosed today on the basis of information cabled by Dr. Joseph Schwartz, its European chairman.
Simultaneously, the Hias-Ica Emigration Association received a report from Dr. James Bernstein, European director of the organization, stating that 3,000 Jews who were held in a concentration camp near Nice were deported on September 25 to Poland.
Men and women and children of all ages are being packed into the deportation trains rolling toward Germany and Poland and, according to Dr. Schwartz’s report, the situation of the Jews in France is “constantly deteriorating.” The thoroughness of the Gestapo manhunt in France is evidenced by the fact that the Nazis are now demanding full lists of Jewish children all over the country and are threatening to close all children’s homes, the cable to the J.D.C. said.
