The Synod of Bishops, meeting to the Vatican today, heard discourses on two potentially explosive subjects: the political situation in Rhodesia and the arrest and detention in Israel of Catholic Archbishop Hillarion Capucci. Capucci has been accused by Israeli authorities of smuggling arms and ammunition to the Arab terrorists.
Patriarch Moabite Maximus V asked the Synod not to condemn Capucci for the alleged activities of which he has been accused and to ignore the “propaganda against him.” Patriarch Maximus declared that Capucci was a man who had taken risks in order to attract the world’s attention to the problems and rights of Arabs, especially those in Jerusalem and the territories occupied by Israel since the 1967 war.
