At a German Memorial Day celebration held in the nearby township of Dudensen, former local Nazi Party leader Fritz Knigge, who was the official speaker, blamed the “Jewish banking fraternity ” for having driven the world into war.
To a protest by a Lutheran minister named Wesemann, Knigge retorted: “Probably you’re a Jew yourself!” Incensed at this remark, the clergyman and members of the church vestry, as well as the mayor, stalked out of the celebration.
