A conference of the Arab and Jewish mayors of the four leading cities in Palestine was held here today to discuss means of checking profiteering and hoarding which have caused the prices of essential commodities to rise to unprecedented heights.
Present at the conference, which was presided over by Mayor Rokach of Tel Aviv, were Mustapha Bey Khalidi, Mayor of Jerusalem; Shabbetai Levi, Mayor of Haifa and Omar II Bitar, Mayor of Jaffa. Rokach addressed the conference urging the Palestine Government to undertake importing of adequate quantities of essential materials which would be sold at low prices. The Tel Aviv Mayor pointed out that though Britain was farther from its sources of supply than Palestine and its lines of communications were much more exposed to Axis attack, there has not been a great increase in the prices of essential foods such as wheat and flour in England. He urged stricter government control of supplies to prevent boarding. The conference decided to form a permanent committee and to present a joint declaration to the High Commissioner outlining its proposals.
