At the request of Sen. Pat McCarran, the Senate Judiciary Committee today agreed to take no further action on President Eisenhower’s proposal for the admission of 240,000 over-quota immigrants until after July 2.
This delay may keep the measure from being adopted before Congress adjourns July 31. Since the Senate is expected to take a three day recess over July 4, the measure may not reach the floor before July 10. With several other programs having priority over the DP immigrant measure and the fact that immigration legislation always is accompanied by lengthy debate, observers here believe that the measure has little chance of adoption at this session.
Meanwhile, Acting Senate Floor Leader William F. Knowland and Speaker of toe House Joseph W. Martin, Jr., today indicated optimism over chances for the adoption of the bill. Interviewed after talking with the President at the White House, Rep. Martin acting as spokesman for both men said that the bill is still under committee consideration in both Houses. He said he was hopeful of getting some favorable action.
