George Meany. president of AFL-CIO sent a cable yesterday to Secretary of State Henry Kissinger which read: “I have today wired Y. Meshel, acting Secretary General of Histadrut, to express the AFL-CIO’s solidarity with and full support of Israel, the Histadrut and the Israeli workers in their struggle for a free society based on decency and social justice.”

Continuing, the labor leader stated: “I urge you in this grave hour of the Israeli nation to give clear and strong voice” to the heartfelt sentiments not only of our membership but to the overwhelming majority of all Americans. “The ignominious Syrian and Egyptian aggression launched on the holiest Jewish holiday has but one purpose–the destruction of Israel and, with it, of democracy in the Middle East,” Meany said. He noted the role of the USSR in supplying the Arab nations and urged the U.S. to act upon its commitment to insure the survival of Israel.”
