Fifteen hundred Vienna Jews who gathered in the Concert House here tonight to hear two representatives of the World Jewish Congress who recently arrived from New York, shouted a thunderous “Yes” when Prof. Siegfried Altmann asked if anti-Semitism still exists in Austria.
They replied similarly when Dr. Altmann, who is accompanied by Ernst Stiassny, asked if they wish to emigrate. Dr. Altmann said that he and Mr. Stiassny had come to Vienna to establish whether assistance should be given to strengthen the Jewish community here. or whether it would be more advisable to arrange for the emigration of all Australian Jews.
Restitution of Jewish property here, Prof. Altmann said, is not a question of sympathy or toleration, but one of legal rights. He stated that public opinion in the United States demands that justice be done in this matter.
Mr. Stiassny brought greetings to the Jews of Vienna from 39,000 Austrian Jews in the United States. He said that he would shortly meet with high government officials with whom he would discuss the treatment of Jews in Austria.
The meeting, which was attended by representatives of the government headed by Minister of Education Felix Hurdes, adopted resolutions asking social and economic equality for Austrian Jews and protesting the delay in admitting 100,000 displaced Jews to Palestine.
