— The State Department said today that it was unaware of plans for the foreign ministers of Israel and Egypt to meet with Secretary of State Edmund Muskie on Thursday. Israeli foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir and Foreign Minister Kamal Hassan Ali of Egypt, both now in New York, were said to be scheduled to see Muskie in Washington Thursday to discuss resumption of the autonomy talks.
Referring to the possibility of trilateral talks, Department spokesman John Trattner said “The schedule at this moment is not clear but the intent to do so is very clear.” Trattner said it also was not clear when U.S. special ambassador Sol Linowitz would meet with Shamir and Ali,
Trattner declined to comment when a reporter asked him about Ronald Reagan’s suggestion of a vatican-tire arrangement for the holy places in East Jerusalem. When the reporter asked if it was “helpful for a Republican candidate to be making proposals on Jerusalem,” Trattner again refused to comment. Reagan made his statement at a meeting yesterday with members of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. (See separate story.)
