What is claimed to be the largest synagogue in the Southern hemisphere was dedicated here when the Hebrew Congregation of Melbourne opened its new $250,000 building with representatives of all the clergy and all Victorian rabbis present as well as Rabbi Cohen of Sydney and Rabbi Hirsch of Adelaide. Notable government representatives were present when Sir John Monash, commander of the Austrian forces in the World War, opened the structure.
