The Jewish problem in Poland is a State problem and cannot be solved without the assistance of the State was the conviction expressed here last night by Lord Melchett at a press conference prior to his departure for Roumania following a three day visit in the interests of the World Maccabee Association of which he is the honorary president.
Lord Melchett referred to the recent anti-Semitic disturbances in Poland. He expressed the hope that the excesses would not damage the reputation of Poland abroad, for the oppression of a minority has never added to the honor of a civilized nation, Lord Melchett said.
In the long run, he asserted, it is impossible for Government to continue a negative attitude toward the influence of Polish Jewry on the general life of the country. Each country, he said, has such Jews as it deserves and Poland must surely find a solution for the Jewish problem, Lord Melchett said.
During his stay in Warsaw, Lord Melchett was received by Foreign Minister Beck and Minister of Interior Pieracki with whom he discussed the situation of the Jews.
Yesterday Lord Melchett visited the Chaluzim training farms in Grochow and the Nalewki quarter. He was enthusiastically acclaimed in the Nalewki quarter by thousands who organized a spontaneous street demonstration. Lord Melchett addressed them from a balcony concerning the rebuilding of Palestine and concluded his remarks with the Hebrew phrase: “If not now, when?”
He was escorted from the quarter by a guard of honor consisting of Jewish porters.
During his stay in Warsaw, Lord Melchett discussed with leaders the unification of the Zionist Organization here.
