Members of German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder’s ruling coalition urged him to speed up compensation for Nazi-era slave laborers. The calls were timed to coincide with German ceremonies marking the 60th anniversary of Kristallnacht. The commemorations were marred when a Berlin memorial to the mass deportation of the city’s Jews was found defaced with swastikas.
