Some 700 people gathered Sunday at the Young Israel of Flatbush to commemorate Zvi Glatt, a young man from the community who was killed in a Palestine Liberation Organization attack in Hebron May 2.
The memorial, held at the end of the traditional 30-day mourning period, included many speakers from the area who praised Glatt’s commitment to bringing Jews closer together. Two local rabbis, Max Schreier and Herbert Bomzer, criticized the Carter Administration which, they charged, attempted to cover up for the terrorists by denying that U.S. citizens were killed or wounded in the raid.
Glatt, one of six killed in Hebron, was visiting friends at Kiryat Arba when the attack occurred. Sixteen people were wounded, including five Americans. Glatt hoped to open a high school in the diaspora. A month before his death he organized a Passover service at a United Nations liaison base for Israeli and UN soldiers. Glatt would have been 21 June 13.
