Memorial Meeting Commemorating Dr. Herzl and Bialik Held in N. Y.

Theodor Herzl’s vision of a Jewish State which culminated in the creation of the State of Israel ten years ago, was commemorated tonight at a cultural meeting at the Hotel Roosevelt here honoring Herzl’s memory and that of Chaim Nachman Bialik, the noted Hebrew poet. The anniversary of Herzl’s death occurred today and that of Bialik takes place tomorrow.

The speakers, all of whom paid tribute to the statesman and the poet for their contributions to Jewish life and culture, included Maurice Samuel, well-known writer; Rabbi Irving Miller, chairman of the American Zionist Council; and Y. Weingarten, educator, and general secretary of the Histadruth Ivrith of America. The meeting was held under the auspices of the American Zionist Council, Herzliah Hebrew Teachers Institute, and the Histadruth Ivrith of America.

Rabbi Miller, stressing the unity in Jewish life, asserted that the basic theme of Herzl was the unity of the Jewish people. “Out of that doctrine of unity, grounded in eternal Jewish thought, emerged Bialik’s dream of a cultural and national center in the ancestral homeland of the Jewish people, ” Rabbi Miller continued. “The conscious, self-respecting Jew in Israel and in the Diaspora is still fired by this basic desire for Jewish unity and is resolved to let nothing in the life of the Diaspora or in the developing new nation in Israel divide the Jewish people.”
