Services in memory of Oscar S. Straus will be held May 16 by the George Junior Republic Association, Inc., it was announced by Richard Welling, president of the association, For many years Mr. Straus was a member of the organization’s extension committee.
A resolution adopted on his death by the association read:
“Whereas, the late Oscar S. Straus was for many years an ardent believer in the principle of self government and education as a means of training youth for citizenship, we have heard with profound sorrow of his death, at this time when our committee needed not only his great ability, his advice and assistance, but the example of his unselfish and noble character.”
Rabbi Stephen S. Wise will officiate at the memorial service.
Albert D. Lasker, former chairman of the United States Shipping Board, in a statement issued to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, declared:
“From earliest boyhood I was raised with the keenest sense of appreciation of all the Straus brothers, Their lives were an inspiration and encouragement to every Jew in America, for they were a family not only distinguished as Jews but as Americans. In their works and service to the general community and the Jewish group they represented the best that man has to give. Oscar Straus’s name and deeds will never die.”
Jacob Weuer, Treasurer of the Central Jewish Institute, at a meeting of the Board of Directors of the C. J. I. Camp held Thursday night, announced a donation of $10,000 in honor of the engagement of his daughter, Ruth Wener. The money is to be used for the construction of three buildings at the C. J. I. Camp at Port Jervis, New York, a Synagogue Auditorium, and two Recreational Indoor Playgrounds.
