ANTI-SEMITIC ORGANIZATIONS ARE UP IN ARMS AGAINST THE IMMIGRATION QUOTAS RECENTLY APPROVED BY PRESIDENT LAZARO CARDENAS. ALTHOUGH THESE QUOTAS LIMIT IMMIGRATION DURING 1938 TO 100 FROM EACH EAST EUROPEAN COUNTRY AND 5,000 FROM OTHER LANDS, ANTI-JEWISH GROUPS CLAIM THEY WILL RESULT IN AN INFLUX OF JEWS.
A MEMORANDUM HAS BEEN SUBMITTED IN THE SENATE, SUPPORTED BY SENATOR RODOLFO T. LOISA AND THE NATIONAL UNION OF THE UNITED STATES OF MEXICO, WHICH WARNS AGAINST “THE JEWISH MENACE” AND HOLDS THAT THE NEW QUOTA WILL INCREASE MEXICO’S JEWISH POPULATION BY 75,000 IN THE NEXT YEAR.
THE NEWSPAPER UNIVERSAL SAYS THAT IMPORTANT LABOR AND FARMERS’ ORGANIZATIONS HAVE ALSO SUBMITTED MEMORANDUMS PROTESTING THE NEW QUOTAS ON THE GROUND THAT THE NEW IMMIGRATION WILL AGGRAVATE THE ECONOMIC CRISIS IN MEXICO.
(THE NEW YORK TIMES REPORTS FROM MEXICO CITY THAT NEWSPAPERS REPORTED THE EXPULSION OF THREE JEWS BY THE GOVERNMENT. THEY ARE KURT ROSENFELD, EXPELLED AS “UNDESIRABLE,” HANS WEGST, FOR ALLEGED INFRINGEMENT OF THE POPULATION LAW, AND JOHN KLOSTERMAN, BECAUSE HE ENTERED FROM THE UNITED STATES ON A TOURIST VISA “AND DEDICATED HIMSELF TO PUNISHABLE ACTIVITIES,” PROBABLY TRADE.
(THE TIMES ALSO SAYS: “WHILE IT IS UNDERSTOOD THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOT FAVOR THE ANTI-SEMITIC CAMPAIGN, THIS CAMPAIGN IS NEVERTHELESS CREATING INCREASING ANTI-SEMITIC FEELING SOUTH OF THE UNITED STATES BORDER. THERE PROBABLY HAS NEVER BEEN SO WIDESPREAD A CAMPAIGN OF THE KIND BEFORE AND IT SEEMS TO BE FINANCED BY GERMAN NAZI ORGANIZATIONS HERE AND SUPPORTED BY CERTAIN MEXICAN SMALL MERCHANTS.”)
