The Central Committee of the Jewish Community of Mexico appealed to the Mexican Government today to use its influence in the United Nations in support of calls for the Soviet Union’s termination of suppressing of cultural and religious rights of Soviet Jewry and for permission to Russian Jews to leave their country for the purposes of reunification with families abroad.

A memorandum detailing the fate of USSR Jewry was sent to Foreign Minister Antonio Carrillo Flores. The letter was signed by Gregorio Shapiro and Z.I. Berebichez, the Committee’s president and general secretary, respectively.

At the same time today, the Soviet Embassy circulated the latest issue of its periodical News Bulletin featuring on the front page photographs intended to show that the USSR permits freedom of all religious practices. One of the pictures shows a Jew wrapped in a prayer shawl. Inside the publication, there is an article declaring that Jews and Ukrainians live in harmony under the Soviet regime.
