Formation of B’nai B’rith’s first Mexican branch was announced from the lodge’s national headquarters here.
The new lodge, known as Espinoza Lodge No. 1176 and located in Mexico city, was installed by Gerson Pappo, a member of the Manhattan-Washington Lodge in New York City, who now resides in Mexico City. The ceremony was conducted in Spanish.
The group is headed by Dr. Sidney Ulfelder and has a charter membership of twenty-eight persons.
Most of the Jewish residents in Mexico have settled there from Eastern Europe during the past decade, following curtailment of immigration by the United States. A Mexican Bureau of the B’nai B’rith was established in Mexico City twelve years ago, at which Jewish immigrants were taught Spanish, and food and lodging provided newcomers unable to find work.
The bureau withdrew two years ago, when the Jewish community in Mexico became able to conduct its affairs independently.
