Judge Stoneman, prominent jurist and editor of the “Miami Herald,” a non-Jew, has accepted the honorary chairmanship of the United Jewish Appeal of the Miami District, which will seek to raise a quota of $150,000 during the latter part of January in the Jewish communities from Palm Beach to Key West, Florida, and Havana, Cuba.
The United Jewish Appeal is a union of the United Palestine Appeal, the quota of which is $100,000 and the United Jewish Campaign, the quota of which is $50,000.
Harry Simonhoff is the active chairman of the united drive. The campaign committee is composed of the leading representatives of the older Jewish community of Miami as well as of active Zionists from other parts of the country, who are newcomers to the city. Benjamin Schwartz, editor of the Baltimore “Jewish Times,” is directing the campaign for the United Palestine Appeal.
AMERICAN EXPEDITION LEAVES FOR PALESTINE TO SEEK RECORDS OF HITTITES
An expedition to Palestine to excavate what is believed to be the site of the City of Mizpah is planned by Dean William F. Bade of the Pacific School of Religion, Professor of Semitic Literature and an explorer of experience who sailed yesterday on the Adriatic. He hopes to find some key to the language of the Hittites, one of the seven peoples recorded in the Bible as the inhabitants of Palestine before the Israelite conquest of the country. Many inscriptions in existence, which nobody can read will be deciphered.
Professor Bade will work under the auspices of the Pacific School of Religion and the American School of Oriental Research. The mound on which he will begin is about six miles north of Jerusalem.
