The French Army’s only permanent military synagogue in Germany was dedicated here by the Chief rabbi of Paris and by the Jewish chaplain of the French forces, with the Commanding General of all French troops in Germany, General Noiret, among the guest speakers.
The synagogue is on the ground floor of a new building that also houses a Catholic church and a Protestant chapel. Their spiritual leaders, who are both Army chaplains attended the dedication ceremony, which included a solemn memorial service for the French Jewish war dead and victims of deportation. General Noiret, in his address, recalled the sufferings of the Jewish people throughout its history and more particularly during the Nazi era, and pledged to give his support to the religious and communal interests of the Jewish soldiers serving in the French occupation forces.
